Author Yin Soenpiet and illustrator Chris Soentpiet visited Sandwich on Feb 6, 2009 to talk about their books Coolies and Brothers
Yin and Chris Soentpiet talked about the vision, research, work, and love of subject they put into creating their powerful picture books. The husband and wife team visited the H.T. Wing, Oak Ridge, and Forestdale Elementary schools where they talked to over 600 third and fourth grade students. Afterwards, the Soentpiets visited the Sandwich Public Library. See more pictures! |

Abrahamic Religions Discussion,
Jan. 25, 2009
Over 120 people came to the Quaker Meetinghouse to hear Sandwich's Stephen Prother moderate an exciting and engrossing panel discussion about the common threads of the Abrahamic religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, as explored in People of the Book. Members of the panel included a Catholic priest, Islamic imam, Jewish rabbi, and a Methodist Minister. More pictures on the day. |

DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Day in Sandwich

As in years past, we asked everyone to celebrate DEAR Day by choosing an appropriate time of day to put aside what they were doing, pick up a book, and read for twenty minutes or more. Students in all of the schools dropped everything and read, and so did people through out the community. We thank everyone who demonstrated their commitment to books and reading. January 10, 2009 - Norah Dooley Tells Stories at Sandwich Public Library
On Friday, January 9, children's book author and story teller Norah Dooley visited the 1st and 2nd graders at the H.T. Wing School, the Forestdale School, and the Oak Ridge schools to read from her Everybody series. On Saturday, January 10, Ms. Dooley visited the Sandwich Public Library to delight and entertain an audience of neary a hundred people of all ages. See more photos.... |

Sandwich Reads Together Launches 2009 Community-Wide Reading Program
“Sandwich Reads Together (SRT), a community-wide reading program, is pleased to announce the launch of its 2009 program, focused on the power of books and story-telling to connect people across cultures and religions, and throughout time. Presentations by 12 authors and illustrators over the course of the eight-week program will be rounded out by discussions and activities for all age groups.”

All events have been designed around the idea that “diverse cultures influence and enrich one another,” the theme of the main reading selection for the 2009 program, People of the Book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks.

Sandwich Reads Together Receives Grants
“Sandwich Reads Together” (SRT) has received several grants to help fund the implementation of its 2009 program: one $7,000 grant and one $2,450 grant from the Kiwanis Club of Sandwich, and $7,500 from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC).“We are thrilled to have won these grants,” says Lauren Robinson, reference librarian at the Sandwich Public Library (SPL) and SRT co-chair, “and look forward bringing another town-wide reading program to Sandwich. In 2009, we will explore multiculturalism,” she adds, “with programming focusing on themes expressed in our primary book choice, Geraldine Brooks’ People of the Book.”
