A Gathering of Readers ~ A Social Evening
October 17, 2008, 7-9pm -
E. Sandwich Grange Hall
Sandwich Readers joined us for an engaging evening of conversation about books, reading, and life. Highlights of the discussion included sharing favorite books. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows and The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery received much praise. Our friend Jonathan Shaw delighted the gathered with a dramatic reading of The Piggy in the Puddle by Charlotte Pomerantz, illustrated by James Marshall. The group also discussed the possibility of book clubs choosing Shakespeare or a classic. The evening concluded with a preview of SRT's upcoming 2009 programs. A good time was had by all!

Veterans Day in Sandwich - November 11, 2007
The Flame Keepers - Sandwich resident Ned Handy
“The Flame Keepers,” a true account of an American soldier’s survival inside the infamous Stalag 17 during World War II, was the featured selection of a special Veterans Day Sandwich Reads Together program. Author and veteran Ned Handy, a resident of Sandwich and Cambridge, spoke about his book to an overflow audience. Sandwich High School students were required to read Handy’s book for their summer reading assignment, and teachers in all subject matters wove the book into their lesson plans. See photos from the event! |

Harry Potter Day in Sandwich
July 20, 2007
Nearly 5,000 people came to Sandwich for Harry Potter Day and enjoyed a full day of events featuring train rides on the Hogwarts Express, a Quiddich Match, and visits to Hagrid's and the Shrieking Shack. The event culminated at midnight, of course, when the final installment of J.K. Rowling's epic went on sale at the town library and everyone settled down to begin reading.

Alice Hoffman & Jodi Picoult
February 10, 2007
Before an audience of over 1,000 people, the two authors met for the first time and shared a common stage to read from their new works. “Jodi Picoult has said that she would move heaven and earth to meet Alice Hoffman,” said SRT co-chairwoman Vicky Uminowicz of Titcomb’s Bookstore, a sponsor of the reading program. “I’m excited for the program to have the two of them appearing together, and I’m also excited for the town. To get one of them here would have been incredible. Getting both of them here is beyond that.” |

In the Heart of the Sea - Nathaniel Philbrick
March, 2005
Sandwich’s first community-wide reading event took place in 2005, when residents read Nathanial Philbrick’s “In the Heart of the Sea.” The event was part of the national “One Book, One Community” effort. Reading can be a solitary thing. This was our first effort to get people talking and possibly taking action because of how a book moved them. |
