Everybody2

Everybody Cooks Rice author Norah Dooley visits Grades 1-2 on January 9, 2009

Sandwich welcomes children's book author and story teller Norah Dooley. Many of you will know Ms. Dooley from her book Everybody Cooks Rice which follows Carrie as she goes from house to house in her neighborhood and discovers how families from different cultures all cook rice, only differently. Her other titles include Everybody Bakes Bread, Everybody Serves Soup, and Everybody Brings Noodles. (See pictures of Ms. Dooley's Jan 9 visit to Sandwich!)

Readers' Resources: Norah Dooley's home page on the web is a neat place. For fun, check out MurrayHill5 for some 'dishing' on children's books about food. Interested in rice farming? How to eat with chop-sticks?

Echoes140

Echoes from the Square author Elizabeth Wellburn and illustrator Deryk Houston visit Grades 7-8 on January 27, 2009

Braving snipers and shellfire, the 'Cellist of Sarajevo,' Vedran Smailovic gave public concerts at 4:00pm sharp every day for 22 days in honor of 22 people killed while waiting in a bread line. Written and illustrated by the husband and wife team of Elizabeth Wellburn and Deryk Houston, this is a compelling story about outrage, dignity, and the determination to believe in hope and beauty. Ms. Wellburn and Mr. Houston will also appear at 4:00pm – 5:00pm at Sandwich Public Library for a community book signing. (See pictures of their Jan 27 visit to Sandwich.)

Readers' Resources: Learn more about cellist Vedran Smailovic online and from the My Hero Project. Visite the illustrator Deryk Houston's website to learn more about the artist and his projects.

Perkins150

Secret Keeper author Mitali Perkins visits Sandwich High School on February 25, 2009

One of life's greatest joys is to create spaces where children feel safe, welcome, and beloved. Stories are one such space. — Mitali Perkins. After studying political science at Stanford and public policy at U.C. Berkeley, Mitali taught at the middle school, high school and college levels. When she began to write fiction, her protagonists -- not surprisingly -- were often strong female characters trying to bridge different cultures. Other titles include First Daughter, Monsoon Summer, and The Not-So-Star-Spangled Life of Sunita Sen. Learn more about Mitali Perkins and read her essay How Books Shape a Child's Heart. (See pictures of her Feb 25 visit to Sandwich.)
