Elizabeth Wellburn & Deryk Houston
Echoes from the Square
Jan. 27, 4:00pm – 5:00pm Sandwich Public Library
Braving snipers and shellfire, the 'Cellist of Sarajevo,' Vedran Smailovic gave public concerts at 4:00pm sharp every day for 22 days in honor of 22 people killed while waiting in a bread line. Written and illustrated by the husband and wife team of Elizabeth Wellburn and Deryk Houston, this is a compelling story about outrage, dignity, and the determination to believe in hope and beauty. (See pictures of their visit to Sandwich on Jan 27.)

Mitali Perkins - Secret Keeper
Feb. 25, 4:00pm - 5:00pm Titcomb’s Bookshop
“One of life's greatest joys is to create spaces where children feel safe, welcome, and beloved. Stories are one such space.” — Mitali Perkins. After studying political science at Stanford and public policy at U.C. Berkeley, Mitali taught at the middle school, high school and college levels. When she began to write fiction, her protagonists -- not surprisingly -- were often strong female characters trying to bridge different cultures. Other titles include First Daughter, Monsoon Summer, and The Not-So-Star-Spangled Life of Sunita Sen. Learn more about Mitali Perkins and read her essay How Books Shape a Child's Heart.

Alice Hoffman - Incantation and Third Angel
Mar. 3, 2:30pm – 3:30pm Titcomb’s Bookshop
"Estrella is a Marrano: During the time of the Spanish Inquisition, she is one of a community of Spanish Jews living double lives as Catholics. She is living in a house of secrets, raised by a family who practices underground the ancient and mysterious way of wisdom known as Kabbalah. When Estrella discovers her family’s true identity — and her family’s secrets are made public — she confronts a world she’s never imagined, where new love burns and where friendship ends in flame and ash, where trust is all by vanquished and betrayal has tragic and bitter consequences." from Ms. Hoffman's webite. Learn more about Alice Hoffman. (See pictures of her March 3 visit to Sandwich High School.) |
